Common to get laser eye surgery at 18?

I’m 18 and have been wearing contact lenses for the past 2 years. Today I’m told by the doctor that I’m allergic to contact lens and will need to stop wearing them. I wish to have laser eye surgery next year (the doctor said I’m suitable for it).

Are there many people in my age group who have had laser eye surgery before? Is it risky?
I have allergic conjunctivitus.
I have serious astigmatism (200.), so I can’t wear daily disposals.
