eye problems
Rene asked:

i think i have something called floaters, its an eye problem where i see a very small black dot everywhere. Iv’e been reading about it and im planning on going to see my optometrist, but while im sitting here on yahoo answers i’d like to know if anyone has this condition or knows anything about it; like treatment or prognosis. thanx!
i never knew it was that common lol, no it doesnt hurt at all and i only notice when i focus on it…i just wanted some more info thats all. has anyone ever seen an optometrist for it? thanx for your responses
frenchtraveler thanx for your great answer. im almost positive they’re floaters though because like you said as well…this dot follows gravity most of the time and it does “float”.

You know, I’ve been seeing floating dots outside for about 6 years (or since I was 11 or 12). I never found out what it was, or it was it is called, but I just don’t ever really notice it anymore. I kinda assumed everybody had it. You just kinda get used to it, but if it is really bad then you should probably get it checked out. b_asher07

It doesn’t sound like floaters. Floaters . . . well, they float. They are dead cells trapped in the eye that float across the vision. I’ve had them, they tend to follow gravity most of the time. Doctors say nothing can be done for them, but I find them less noticeable when I’ve had a good rest. I think a good nutrient-rich diet helps, you can even take over-the-counter vitamins that support healthy eye function. I also use an essential oil called Frankincense — not IN the eye, but above the eye. It seems to clear things up.

That is not the same thing as a very small black dot everywhere. That sounds something with the retina or something they call macular degneration (a common thing in diabetics). I’M NOT A DOCTOR - don’t take this as a diagnosis. It is good that you are going to an eye doctor to see what’s going on.

Ask the doctor about the vitamins, if he/she thinks they would help. My eye doctor also suggests taking flax seed oil. It helps to moisturize. frenchtraveler

Yes, floaters are quite common, and (I don’t at all mean to scare you here) they are not a problem unless you see a marked increase in them, perhaps after striking your head. Anyway, that’s rare.

An interesting (??) sidelight: a few years ago my wife and I both went to our optometrist for routine exams, and I mentioned that I had been seeing some little black things, especially in one eye. She checked them out, and told me they were normal and … what I said in my first paragraph. I remember noticing that she wrote down one of those 5- or 6-digit numbers on the form I was supposed to turn in at the desk on my way out. (I’m in the U.S., if this sounds strange to anyone.) Well, in a few weeks we received “Explanations of Benefits” from our health insurance company — we hadn’t expected any part of the exam for either of us to be covered, because it never had been before — and my fee was partly covered, although my wife’s was not. When I asked about this, I was told that since the doctor had been able to make a specific diagnosis for me — “floaters”, or whatever the proper medical term might be — the insurance company covered part of the fee.

Was was the lesson I learned? That’s hard to say, because I’m sure there are cases where this can backfire. I guess I learned to always ask about things, because even if they don’t turn out to be important, it may be worthwhile! Web Maven
