Can laser eye surgery prolong my short sight?

eye surgery
x2 asked:

I am short sighted and wondered if laser surgery can prolong my sight?
I have very badly short-sighted (getting worse) and wondered if some laser surgery will extend the number of years I can see?

I understand that I will be able to see without glasses, but will it mean that I lose my sight at the same aye if I hadn’t had it done?

Laser surgery can fix nearsightedness, but you will need to go to one of the places that does it and get evaluated as to your suitability for the procedure. Most of the places will do the evaluation for free. Not everybody is suitable for this operation. If you decide to do it, check out the place where you are getting it done very carefully in reference to the sucess rate for their procedures, this is not the time to go with the low bidder ! You are only paying for it once, but you will be living with the results forever!

You mentioned you were extremely nearsighted and it is still getting worse. The maximum amount of nearsightedness the operation can fix is about 8-9 diopters (depending on the thickness of your corneas). The reason they can’t do more than that is, the higher the amount of nearsightedness, the more of your corneas they will have to be blasting away with lasers and they would become too thin to work properly. If your prescription is higher than about -8, they could still do it, but you would still need glasses or contacts for the remainder of the nearsightedness that they couldn’t fix. Because the procedure is quite expensive, you might want to consider whether it is even worth it, if you would still need to wear glasses afterwards. Also, if your vision is still getting worse, they won’t want to do laser surgery until it is stabilized. There are some other procedures available where they surgically insert various kinds of lenses into your eyes. They can fix higher degrees of myopia than laser surgery, so you might want to investigate them.

You seem to be worried that you are going blind. Usually, you won’t go blind from nearsightedness, although if it gets real bad, you might wind up having to wear real thick glasses. However, there is another condition called malignant myopia, which is not very common, but can lead to detachment of the retina and other problems including blindness. I don’t think laser surgery will do anything to prevent this condition from getting worse, but there may be other treatments available, so check with your eye doctor. Flying Dragon

I might be worried more concerned about improving your mastery and understanding of the Queen’s English!

I assume that you are hoping to improve your short sightedness, rather than endeavouring to make it last longer?

This is the aim of laser eye surgery, though it cannot be used successfully on everyone, you would need to consult an appropriate practitioner. Dr Frank

you mean you’re like -10.00 or something? if you were given glasses before the age of 10 then you may be suffering worse eyesight than necessary because many babies who were born with poor eyesight improve it in the first 10 years of their lives (A natural ability without the effect of added lenses)

Another thing you should note is the long term effect of wearing glasses. Scientists wanting to learn about this tested strong lenses on chickens. They found by the end that they ALL had developed myopic/hyperopic eyesight and elongated eyeballs.
In the natural/open environment usually chickens have normal eyesight.

During the day you might want to avoid bad habits that may lead you to experiencing poor vision. When you are suffering poor quality of eyesight its a state initially temporary but if prolonged can become pernament (unless action is taken.) Think about how you would act today if you were again blessed with perfect vision. Would you feel comfortable with being in that position again? or perhaps youd throw it away/run away instead.. I suggest learning to approve of having eyesight in the first place and to value it. Avoid treating the abiliy to see things/notice them as something unpleasant or a disadvantage. You may say “of course i approve of perfect vision, i love wearing glasses!”. Glasses however are forcing that perfect vision on you. whether you like it or not. Your genuine attitude is reflected by the current state of your unasisted vision.

You know we all have the 5 senses. (Sight, Smell, Touch, Hearing, Taste) It is more logical to appreciate them all and see positive in them. If we dont then its just as easy for us to disregard them….

Also dont be afraid to approach life in a different way. You may notice people with normal eyesight appear to act/think differently from myopia sufferers. This difference is apparent even online with their different styles showing up in any text they have writen which can be read by others. It all stems from the person’s attitude in the end Darius B
