Can a dog have swelling that looks like cherry eye after surgery?

eye surgery
Kimberly B asked:

I have a 4 mo old Lhasa Apso/Shi Tzu that had surgery to tuck a cherry eye back. He was doing well until today when I saw what looked like the beginnings of a cherry eye once again. The vet looked at him and said it may be just swelling. I was given drops to help get the swelling down with an order to return in a week or sooner if anything else changes. I just wondered if anything similar has happened to anyone. Thanks in advance.

You should listen to your vet…he has seen the dog in person, performed the surgery, and has gone to vet school; nobody else on YA has those qualifications. There is a good possibility that you are seeing swelling, but cherry eyes CAN come back. Good luck!

It MAY be swelling or it could be the cherry eye popping back up. I have a dog that has had cherry eye surgery twice now, the first time the vet thought it was just swelling, and it ended up being the cherry eye popping back up almost immediately after surgery. The second time it didn’t take at all, so now we are in talks with an opthamology specialist… Wait and use the drops like the vet said, but if it doesn’t stop being “swollen” soon, it might be the surgery didn’t work.
