Many patients experience some LASIK surgery side effects. These can include blurring of vision, sensitivity to light, or a feeling of dryness in the eyes. In most cases, these conditions last only for a short period of time, until your eyes heal.
You will likely be asked to schedule a follow-up doctor visit somewhere between a day and a week after your procedure to make sure everything is healing nicely. However, be alert to anything you think is abnormal and contact your doctor

Any form of surgery comes with risks, and the more delicate the surgery the riskier it is. Personally, I would NEVER trust my eyes to a doctor or a machine to cut with lasers. I would much rather wear glasses for the rest of my life.

Some of the side effects of LASIK surgery are night blindness, loss of depth perception, heightened sensitivity and maybe a little discomfort.
I had LASIK surgery about 4 years ago and experience all of these side effects. The good news is, it didn’t last long, and in just a few weeks I could see without my contact lenses or glasses. It was a great feeling waking up in the morning and could actually make out the time on the alarm clock without picking it up and holding it to my face. Or going swimming without having to worry about losing a contact lens.

The most common side effects are:
- dry eyes
- over/undercorrection
- visual acuity fluctuation
- light sensitivity
- double vision
- decentered ablation
There are some others, but when complications happen, these are the most frequent.

Potential Side effects from Lasik include:
1. Dry eye–this occurs because the creation of the corneal flap disrupts the corneal nerve endings that tell the brain that the eye surface is dry. Most patients are on drops for several weeks, sometimes months. This is the most common side effect we hear about from patients.
2. Night time vision issues: Halos, glare, arcs. These occur in some patients; they tend to get better over time, but depending on the cause could be a reason to consider retreatment after the initial laser treatment.
3. Undercorrection or overcorrection: Causes vision to be blurry for distance or near, depending on the situation and potentially the age of the patient. Even though the laser and laser settings are ultraprecise, it’s still operating on a human eye that can heal in a manner different that was expected. Retreatments generally can deal with this very well.
4. Intraoperative flap issues. No matter what type of refractive surgery is performed (Lasik, Lasek, PRK, Intralase), they all involve creation of a flap or removal of the most superficial layer of the cornea. Although very uncommon, flap issues can still occur.
5. Decentered or unevent laser treatment. Very uncommon, now that most lasers employ tracking devices.
6. Vision that is worse postoperatively. This is very very rare.
Sounds like a lot, but in reality the vast majority of patients do extremely well and are very happy they had it done. Make sure you feel comfortable that your surgeon has answered your questions and can reasonably meet your expectations.
